Velashape and Velasmooth are commercial machines that use a combination of radiofrequency energy (RF), infrared light energy, and mechanical vacuum massage to treat cellulite. They are manufactured by Syneron, an Israel company which is listed on the NASAQ stock exchange and is the leading global aesthetic device company. With offices all around the world, Syneron has a range of medical-aesthetic products for a wide variety of conditions including cellulite reduction, hair removal and wrinkle reduction.
Velashape vs Velasmooth
Velashape and Velasmooth are similar machines and both use the same modalities to reduce cellulite – light (infrared), bi-polar radio frequency (RF), mechanical rollers and vacuum suction. However, VelaSmooth is an improvement on the original VelaSmooth technology.
While VelaSmooth was cleared by the FDA in 2005 for the temporary reduction of cellulite, VelaShape was FDA-approved in 2007 for temporary cellulite reduction AND the temporary reduction of thigh circumference. VelaShape is twenty-percent more powerful than its predecessor and requires less treatment time, frequency and number of sessions.
How Does It Work?
The combination of infrared and RF energy increase the oxygen diffusions between the cells by heating the skin. The vacuum and roller massage smooth out the skin to facilitate the safe and efficient delivery of energy. Metabolism of the fat cells (lipolysis) is a result, along with lymphatic drainage and a reduction in the size of the actual chamber that houses the fat cells. The final outcome is a smoother appearance for the skin and, with VelaShape, a reduction in the circumference of the treated area.
What Are the Results?
VelaSmooth will require two 45-60 minute treatments per week for at least 6 to 8 weeks. You should expect to start seeing modest improvements after the fifth or sixth session.
VelaShape will require one session of 30 minutes per week for 4-6 consecutive weeks. Gradual improvement of the skin in the treated area can be seen following the first treatment. Results in circumference reduction are seen from the first to second session and cellulite improvement is noticed in as few as 4 sessions. In clinical studies, patients reported an average reduction of about 1 inch post treatment series.
With both machines the results are not permanent. You will need regular maintenance treatments to maintain your results and these are recommended at one or two sessions a month.
What Are the Side Effects?
The majority of patients will find this type of treatment comfortable and very much like a warm deep tissue massage. The strength of the treatment can be changed to accommodate your sensitivity and comfort level. Patients often experience a warm sensation for few hours after their treatment. The skin maybe red for several hours following your session.
You can return to your normal activities immediately after the treatment.
How Much Does VelaSmooth and VelaShape Cost?
The cost of session on both these machines will vary from person to person based on their level of cellulite, they response to the treatment, the number of areas treated and their amount of body fat. This works out to be around $90 per session on average.
